Custom Teams vs Org Units
Highlighting the differences between custom teams and org units.
Note: For clients implemented before April 15, 2019, Org Units are known as Groups.
Custom Teams
Custom teams need to be manually created and updated. Custom teams allow you to assign an organizational structure that is completely separate from the org chart in Namely. You can use custom teams to display committees or councils within the company, or a task force assigned to a given project. Please note that changes to job titles will not flow over to update an individual's job title assigned in their custom team. Whenever you want to add/remove someone from custom teams, you will need to edit each team page. However, it offers the ability to record open positions and some aggregated data points about the different team members.

Org Units
Org Units (Departments, Divisions, Office Locations) can be shown on the Teams page if desired, but they can also be hidden from view and only shown in an employee profile. The organizational structure follows the reporting relationships assigned within Teams & Allocations on an individual's profile, which flows into the Org Chart within the People page. The structure of these Org Units cannot be modified. To see your Org Units settings, go to Company > Settings > Org Units.
For more information about Org Units, please see Org Types and Org Units.
Summary
To summarize, there are two main differences between an Org Unit and a Custom Team.
-
Custom teams must be updated and maintained manually—Org Units can be imported into.
-
Custom teams can accommodate a custom org structure (set active dates, currency, allocations, etc.), whereas Org Units do not have an adjustable org structure (it pulls directly from the reporting relationships in Namely, like the overall Org Chart).
